Carolina Shag Instructors Ashley & Tobitha Stewart live in Landis, NC. Tobitha is a North Carolina Realtor & Ashley is a Medical Benefit Consultant. Ashley is a 2001 graduate of East Carolina University & speaks fluent Spanish & Portuguese. Go Pirates!

Ashley & Tobitha have been competing on the Shag circuit together since 2008. They were inducted into National Living Legends of Dance in 2015. Ashley & Tobitha enjoy competing at the National Shag Dance Championships in North Myrtle Beach, SC, the USA Grand National Dance Championships in Atlanta, GA, US Open Swing Dance Championships in Burbank, CA, as well as competing on the Competitive Shaggers Association circuit in the Professional Division. Tobitha is the 2017 & 2018 Grand National Dance Championship Master Shag Champion with her partner Jay Rollins. She and Jay were also the 2018 National Shag Dance Senior Champions. They consider their dance, the Carolina Shag, as being a dance with extremely deep roots, a sub-culture that is self-sustaining and a lifestyle that,once it has infected you, becomes an integral part of your life! 

Ashley & Tobitha have been instructing Shag since 2009.  They look forward each year to teaching during DJ Throwdown at Ducks and at the OD Arcade during SOS. Also, they enjoy teaching locally and traveling regionally to Shag Dance Events to teach Shag workshops. They have also been invited to Swing Events along the east and west coasts of the United States to showcase and teach the Shag! They enjoy giving back to their shag community!!

Ashley and Tobitha are instrumental in and extremely committed to the advancement of the Junior Shaggers. Also, they are active in and dedicated to the management of The Junior Shag Dance Team. They both are very involved in the social and competition aspect of Carolina Shag. They are members of the Competitive Shaggers Association (CSA) whose mission is to help preserve the dance. Ashley & Tobitha have served on the Board of Directors of the Competitive Shaggers Association for numerous years. Ashley is the Past President having served in 2011 and 2012. Dancing is their love and passion! They love both competing and teaching!

In 2015 Tobitha was exploring ways to spread her love of shag, and Shag Basics was born! Tobitha and Jennifer Cannon designed a T-shirt brand to spread their love of shag! The Shag Basics brand is about more than spreading Shag! It’s a way of life and a style of clothing with great slogans like “Good Times Essential” and “Shaggin in the Carolinas” and many more to come! There are plenty of T-shirt companies in the world, but Shag Basics’ mission sets itself apart with a mission statement that goes beyond fun clothing: to spread the power of Shag!
